Since arriving to Vietnam on Friday‚ North Korean Prime Minister Kim Yongil has been keeping busy.
He's visited a coal mine and a seaport and learned about the country's agriculture and tourism industry.
And that‚ observers say‚ gives his visit more meaning than a regular goodwill trip.
Vietnam supplies 13 percent of the world's coal.
This abundant natural resource has been luring foreign investors and has helped boost the country's economic growth by 7 to 9 percent each year.
Though North Korea and Vietnam are both socialist countries‚ they've had little exchange in the past decade but this appears to be changing.
The latest visit comes on the heels of a meeting earlier this month between North Korean leader Kim Jongil and Vietnam Communist Party chief Nong Duc Manh.
Kim was quoted as saying he would try to learn from the Doi Moi reforms of Vietnam and that he would personally make a visit to Vietnam in the near future.
Doi Moi refers to the reform and openness policies that have driven Vietnam's rapid growth since being adopted in 1986.
Vietnam boasts a GDP of 62 billion U.S. dollars almost triple that of North Korea's.
Prime Minister Kim Yongil's visit is seen as an advance visit to prepare for a future visit by the North Korean leader.
