The two Koreas‚ the US‚ China‚ Japan and Russia will meet again at the nuclear bargaining table Thursday in Beijing.
Their focus is again to begin implementing a September 2005 agreement that provides security guarantees and economic assistance for North Korea’s nuclear dismantlement.
The six parties failed to push the process forward last December‚ but diplomats say some progress could come in this session as the groundwork has been laid toward that end.
A package deal is on the table with speculation high over the specifics that have yet to be unveiled in the coming days.
The spotlight‚ however‚ has turned to Japanese news reports saying North Korea is willing to at least freeze its Yongbyon nuclear reactor and accept international inspectors in return for energy assistance.
Chief US nuclear envoy Christopher Hill has denied the reports‚ saying no discussion was held on heavy fuel oil in Berlin talks between US and North Korean negotiators.
He did say‚ however‚ that heavy fuel can still be discussed at the upcoming session because the 2005 agreement includes energy provisions.
The road toward North Korea's nuclear dismantlement could prove to be a long one‚ but analysts say even a small step forward in that direction this time would be considered progress.
