South Korean officials are angry at Japanese cabinet members for raising the possibility of a pre-emptive strike against North Korea.
The presidential office of Cheong Wa Dae said Tuesday that‚ Seoul will respond sternly to comments from Tokyo‚ justifying the use of military power on the Korean peninsula.
Citing Pyeongyang's missile test-firings last week‚ conservative Japanese officials had proposed amending the country's pacifist constitution‚ to allow pre-emptive strikes on missile bases in the North.
Presidential Spokesman Chung Tae-ho described the proposal as "Japan's display of its militant nature."
Reflecting on Korea's painful history under Japanese colonial rule last century and during World War II‚ Chung added that Tokyo's latest comments can only be viewed as a serious threat to peace in Northeast Asia.
Seoul-Tokyo ties have chilled in recent months over issues‚ related to Japan's imperialist past‚ including Tokyo's refusal‚ to properly apologize for wartime atrocities and its territorial claims to Korea's Dokdo islets.
For its part‚ South Korea has firmly stated that North Korea's missile launches were a provocative act that will not be tolerated.
But it is also making clear that South Korea won't allow Japanese politicians to use the incident as a springboard to justify military strikes on the Korean peninsula.
