12 North Korean defectors have been arrested in northern Thailand‚ on charges of entering the country illegally‚ Japan's Kyodo News Agency reports.
Thai police are quoted as saying that the North Korean defectors were caught on a bus‚ heading to the capital city of Bangkok from Phayao province in northern Thailand.
Some of them are reported to be seeking asylum in a third country.
Local police say it's not common to see such a large number of North Korean defectors in a single group‚ especially using a bus as their means of transportation.
An increasing number of North Koreans have fled to neighboring countries in Asia‚ to escape hunger and oppression.
