North Korea has reportedly asked South Korea to help its residents watch the upcoming World Cup soccer matches on television.
Seoul is positively considering the request‚ in hopes that the sports event will help bring the two Koreas closer together.
Kim Min-jung reports.
North Korea wants to open its airwaves‚ so that its people can watch the world's largest spectator sport‚ soccer.
With no broadcast access to the World Cup which begins on June 9‚ Pyeongyang has asked Seoul to make it possible for North Koreans to watch key matches of the soccer tournament.
North Korea made similar requests to the South for the 2004 Athens Olympics and the 2005 East Asia football match.
But this is the first time the North has asked for the South's cooperation involving the World Cup.
South Korea's broadcast representative "Korea Pool" has paid 25 million U.S. dollars to the marketing arm of FIFA for the rights to air the soccer games.
But‚ with the costs aside‚ the South Korean government will reportedly consider granting North Korea's request‚ and seek the cooperation of the Korea Football Association as well as the world's football governing body‚ FIFA.
Seoul hopes‚ by allowing North Koreans to watch South Korean soccer players run against other teams‚ the two divided Koreas may be able to come together in cheering for the national team.
