All the participants in the 6-way talks believe the meeting to dismantle North Korea's nuclear programs should resume by early April at the latest‚ in light of the participants' domestic political agendas.
So says South Korea's former chief delegate to the nuclear talks Song Min-soon.
He made the remarks to Korean correspondents in Washington‚ after meeting with Deputy Secretary of State Robert Zoellick and the U.S. Chief Negotiator to the nuclear talks Christopher Hill.
But Mr. Song‚ who now heads the Office of Unification-Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Planning at the Presidential Office‚ noted that North Korea continues to boycott the negotiations because of the U.S. financial sanctions related to its alleged counterfeiting activities.
It says it will only come back if the U.S. lifts the sanctions.
In September‚ Washington accused the Macau-based bank Banco Delta-Asia of laundering money for Pyeongyang.
It warned it could forbid U.S. financial institutions from doing any kind of business with Banco Delta.
This led to a rush of withdrawals from the bank‚ forcing Macau officials to close all North Korea-related accounts to avoid U.S. sanctions.
Mr. Song said Seoul and Washington share concerns about the North's financial activities and stressed Pyeongyang should take necessary measures to resolve those concerns.
