Two days ago‚ the military declared martial law saying the aim was solely to calm tensions‚ insisting a coup was not underway.
Two days later‚ it has taken power outright saying it is‚ in fact‚ a coup d'etat.
So‚ what's fueling the situation in Thailand? What could happen next? And why should we be paying attention?
Panitan Wattanayagorn joins us live on the phone from Thailand. Panitan is a professor political science at Bangkok-based Chulalongkorn University.
Professor Wattanayagorn‚ thank you for joining us.
Professor‚ just three days ago it wasn't yet a coup d'etat and now it is.
Do you feel a change in the air on the streets of Bangkok? What does coup d'etat look like in Thailand?
What's next for Thailand? What are the military's intentions in declaring a coup - what made them change their mind in two days? Will we see an all-out election or the appointment of a new government?
How will the latest political unrest impact the Thai economy? We understand that tourism makes up about 10-percent of the entire economy there.
Do we see the economy taking a hit?
Certainly an intense situation there.
Professor Panitan Wattanayagorn‚ many thanks to you for speaking with us. That was Panitan Wattanayagorn‚ professor of political science at Chulalongkorn University live for us from Bangkok.
