Tensions are rising over the nearby South China Sea as a handful of countries continue to lay claims on a cluster of several hundred oil-rich isles known as the Spratly Islands.
In the latest of the territorial disputes‚ the Filipino media reports that two Chinese military surveillance vessels came close to a shoal occupied by the Philippines in the disputed Spratlys last Thursday.
In response‚ the Philippine military dispatched three military surveillance vessels to monitor the Chinese ships.
