At a daily press briefing Monday‚ Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said the issue had a direct bearing on global and regional balance and stability.
He stressed Beijing wants both sides to act prudently and seek diplomatic solutions to ease tensions and increase regional security.
Last Friday‚ U.S. Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel laid out plans to strengthen U.S. missile defenses.
The move is in response to provocations by North Korea‚ which has threatened a preemptive nuclear strike against the U.S.
The Pentagon will spend one billion dollars on 14 new ballistic missile interceptors in Alaska.
