And in one of his first acts of the new year US President Barack Obama signed a 660 billion-dollar defense spending bill‚ that includes the toughest sanctions against Iran so far.
Firms and financial institutions‚ including foreign central banks‚ may be barred from trading on US financial markets if they're engage in businesses with Iranian companies.
The news sanctions mostly target Iran's banking and oil sectors.
Korea‚ which imports nearly 10-percent of the nation's total crude oil from Iran‚ has requested Washington for a special exemption from the new measure‚ at least for the next few months.
The bill also includes new provisions for the detainment of terrorism suspects.
