[Reporter : ] Here's a name we haven't heard in a long while.
Liza Minnelli.
The talented and durable singer and actress was recently in Paris for two special reasons.
Durable maybe the right word here‚ the 65-year-old entertainer was there to perform and also to receive the Order of the Legion d'honneur.
[Reporter : ] And over in New York‚ Central Parks biggest fan created a special map about the trees found there.
There are more than 20-thousand trees found there and I can only imagine the time and effort it took to list them all.
[Reporter : ] A true labor of love it is.
But first we start with some updates on the greenest biofuel in town.
Algae.
Biofuels produced from palm oil and corn were once looked to as the bright spark in the search for a greener future.
Unfortunately‚ they were shunned as the culprits that spiked food prices throughout the world.
That was an inevitable progression‚ when producers around the world found it more profitable to use their resources to create fuel than food.
And that's when algae entered the picture.
But although it is a viable alternative fuel‚ there's still a lot of work to be done in order to mass produce it at a much lower cost.
Currently‚ the cost of production of algae fuel is ten times higher than that of palm oil fuel.
And that is why farming costs must be reduced to one tenth the current price in order to make the algae product commercially viable.
Large companies are investing aggressively in the relevant research today.
And industry experts believe that in around 15 years‚ better technologies to control such costs will be ready.
A special map that details the trees‚ shrubs and dirt trails found in Central Park‚ New York has been completed.
Ken Chaya is the man behind the two-sided waterproof map that lists almost 20 thousand trees and represents around 85 percent of the greenery in the park.
A legend identifies the tree's species and each is represented by different shaped leaf or color.
Surprisingly‚ Chaya is neither a scientist nor an arborist he is a birdwatcher and graphic designer.
He says it was most challenging to identify the various species when some of them look quite similar.
And that is why the process involved a lot of study and research.
In order to examine various nooks and crannies of the park‚ he sometimes had to walk more than 800 kilometers across the park in rain and snow.
When he discovered specimens that didn't exist on previous records‚ he felt all the painstaking efforts were worthwhile.
The map is now complete‚ but Ken plans to continue exploring the park just to appreciate every wonderful tree found in it.
Over in France‚ singer and actress Liza Minnelli was awarded the country's highest honor on July 11.
The 65 year-old entertainer was decorated as an officer of the Order of the Legion d'honneur in Paris.
French Cultural Minister Frederic Mitterrand was full of praise‚ as he addressed Liza.
Minnelli has been busy travelling around the globe and bagging various honors.
Just days before receiving this honor in France‚ she was in London to pick up the Icon Prize at the Silver Clef Awards.
Paris is no stranger to Minnelli.
She was there to perform a live show in 1969 at the Olympia.
Liza's latest visit to Paris is also to give a special show at the exact same venue.
She is remembered best for her performance in the movie "Cabaret" which landed her an Academy Award some 40 years ago.
