The incumbent head of the United Nations‚ Ban Ki-moon‚ aims for a second term as secretary-general and is highly likely to wrap-up his reelection by the end of this month.
And according to anonymous UN diplomats on Sunday‚ Ban will make an official announcement of his candidacy Monday morning‚ local time‚ in New York‚ following a meeting with delegates from Asia.
Once Ban does make his announcement‚ the UN Security Council is widely expected to give him a positive recommendation.
At least nine "yes" votes and no veto power by permanent members -- the United States‚ Britain‚ France‚ Russia and China -- are needed for Ban to secure his second term.
Ban‚ the former South Korean foreign minister‚ received criticism initially from Human Rights Watch for not speaking out more on China's human rights issues as well as abuses taking place in Myanmar and Sri Lanka‚ among other nations.
But Ban insists that he has aggressively tried to resolve human rights cases along with the two other pillars of the UN‚ security and development‚ during the past four and a half years.
To his credit‚ the 67-year-old career diplomat has worked to defuse world crises in the Middle East and Cote d'Ivoire.
His five-year term is set to expire at the end of this year and with climate issues topping his agenda his reelection as secretary-general could take place by the end of this month at a General Assembly session.
