A powerful 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck the northeastern region of Myanmar near the Thai border Thursday evening resulting in at least 11 deaths and evacuations of scores of people.
The tremors were strongly felt as far away as Bangkok‚ almost 800 kilometers from the epicenter.
The US Geological Survey initially recorded the quake as magnitude 7.0‚ but later revised it down to 6.8.
China's state-run Xinhua news agency‚ for instance‚ is reporting that at least 10 people were killed from landslides triggered by the quake in Shan state.
A number of aftershocks measuring 4.8 and 5.4 in magnitude followed.
There‚ however‚ was no tsunami created.
Experts say the quake was comparable in magnitude and depth to last year's Haiti earthquake.
