In Egypt President Hosni Mubarak's announcement Tuesday that he would not run for re-election in September brought about the opposite result from what he initially expected.
The announcement actually stirred up his own supporters instead of dissipating anti-government demonstrators.
Mubarak supporters opened fire on the protesters while calling them 'traitors' and 'agents' in Cairo's Tahrir Square Thursday morning before dawn.
The anti-government activists responded by throwing rocks and petrol bombs while the Egyptian military‚ true to its pledge‚ did not use violence to support either side.
The worst violence in nine days of protests killed several activists and injured more than 640 people.
Meanwhile‚ Korea Trade Investment Promotion Agency estimates a roughly 80 percent loss in this month's exports to Egypt as the local customs office has shut down.
The agency initially forecast 300 million US dollars worth of exports would be sent to the North African country.
[Interview : ] "If this unrest is not stopped‚ the Egyptian economy might be completely paralyzed. If this happens‚ then export items to Egypt would not be shipped over starting next week."
KOTRA also said more than two-thirds of Korean firms in the region have already left the country or are in the process of evacuating.
