요약정보
Thousands of New Yorkers braved frostbite and arrest to take part in the 2011 No Pants Day.
Large groups of people going pants-less and pretending like nothing unusual is going on is quite a sight.
The event started in 2002 with just seven people and now it has become an annual event with a faithful following.
Participants braved the cold weather at six different meeting points throughout New York City to drop their pants while onboard the train at designated stops.
They would calmly remove their pants and fold them up.
The idea was to act like nothing unusual was going on and go about their usual daily routine.
No Pants Day was created in August 2001 by Charlie Todd of a group called Improv Everywhere.
The group has been dedicated to devising new missions to cause scenes of chaos and joy in public places.
So far they have executed over 100 missions involving tens of thousands of undercover agents.
Their events aim to inject a healthy dose of excitement‚ break the monotony of daily lives and give strangers a story they can tell for the rest of their lives.
Some used the event to wear panties or boxers with special messages.
Most of the participants said that it was a chance to foster a sense of community spirit.
Virologist Julian Tang is busy working with volunteers who are required to breath in pepper and sneeze.
The reason behind this is to study how influenza viruses are transmitted through the air and to come up with more effective ways to deal with viral outbreaks like the swine flu pandemic of 2009.
It is a known fact that influenza is primarily transmitted from person to person through sneezing or coughing.
But little is known about how far a virus can travel through the air when someone laughs‚ cries or simply breathes.
In order to record the density variations in gases‚ Tang's team uses a specialized mirror and a high-speed camera.
The study will continue until June 2012‚ and Dr. Tang hopes to have compiled enough data to come up with the answers to questions like how much distance should separate patients in a hospital‚ who and how many passengers on an aircraft should be quarantined and how to better utilize face masks.
Recently‚ the highly contagious foot and mouth disease or FMD has been found in animals from Kosti village‚ Bulgaria.
A wild boar that was shot by hunters in the area first tested positive to the illness.
Samples taken from 16-hundred domestic animals in the south-east of Bulgaria have shown 37 positive samples for the disease.
In a bid to contain FMD‚ the green light to destroy all vulnerable animals in Bulgaria was given to the local government from the European Commission.
Owners who had to slaughter their animals will be compensated according to market prices.
FMD is not dangerous for humans‚ but a severe outbreak could have negative effect on the economy.
