An Iran Air passenger jet crashed in northwestern Iran on Sunday evening local time leaving at least 77 dead and 28 injured.
Iran's state media reports that the plane with 105 people onboard broke into pieces and authorities say that the number of fatalities is expected to rise as many of the injured are in critical condition.
The others survived with light injuries.
The Boeing 727 was en route from Tehran to Orumiyeh International Airport when the incident occurred.
Bad weather appears to be the main cause as 70 centimeters of snow fell in the region while rescue operations are still being hampered by heavy fog.
It reportedly approached the runway to land‚ but was forced to delay due to the heavy snow and fog.
The aircraft then became invisible on radar and crashed near the city of Orumiyeh after making a second attempt to land.
But critics also point out that plane crashes are far from a rare occurrence in Iran saying the country's aging airline infrastructure is a result of sanctions that restrict the country from acquiring necessary parts to maintain its commercial aircrafts.
Iran's worst aviation disaster took place in February 2003 when a plane carrying members of the elite Revolutionary Guards crashed in the country's southeast‚ killing all 302 people on board.
