There were no airstrikes or rockets in Gaza after the week-long cease fire between Hamas and Israel agreed to over the past weekend commenced.
It's been a little over three weeks since the violence in the Gaza Strip left 13 Israelis and more than 1‚200 Palestinians dead. Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert announced troops will be pulled out from the area before US President-elect Barack Obama takes office this Tuesday‚ showing Israel's intention to get off to a smooth start with Washington's new administration.
[Interview : Ehud Olmert‚ Israeli Prime Minister ] "Israel is not aiming to rule Gaza. We are trying to leave the area as soon as possible."
Now‚ the world is focusing its attention on the troubled region pledging to get aid into Hamas-led Gaza as quickly as possible. Arab leaders decided to back the Palestinian Authority of 2-billion US dollars to rebuild the area and European leaders gathered in Jerusalem to make sure the cease-fire holds.
[Interview : Mirek Topolanek‚ Czech Prime Minister ] "We expressed hope that it is important that we will lead along to sustainable cease of violence enabling the people of both sides to resume their ordinary lives."
Egypt‚ is expected to mediate between Israel and Hamas on Thursday and Israel appears to be on board. Meanwhile‚ each side is claiming victory in the 22-day war. A top Hamas leader claimed that Israel failed to achieve its goals while the Israelis declared they had succeeded their objective of cutting Hamas's strength of firing rockets into the Jewish state.
However‚ average citizens in the Gaza Strip are facing a lack of basic necessities such as food‚ fuel and medical supplies giving pressure to Israel to reopen the borders with Gaza where nearly 4-thousand buildings have been destroyed. The border of Gaza has been sealed since 2007.
