Finland's former president Martti Ahtisaari won the Nobel Peace Prize for over three decades of resolving conflicts without violence around the world.
The Norwegian Nobel Committee picked the 71-year-old mediator who expressed hope that the honor will help him raise funds for his peacemaking organization.
He was recognized for his efforts to induce a peaceful resolution for Kosovo to achieve independence from Serbia and in Namibia‚ Indonesia and Northern Ireland.
The 1.4 million US dollar prize will be presented in December on the anniversary of Alfred Nobel's death.
