Elsewhere in the world.
African leaders in Egypt on the last day of a regional summit Tuesday passed a resolution urging Zimbabwe's leader‚ Robert Mugabe‚ to negotiate with the opposition group in his country.
The statement however is seen to have fallen on deaf ears as Mugabe harshly dismisses all criticism surrounding his regain of power.
Yoo Jihae reports.
Hopes of a peaceful ending to the political upheaval in Zimbabwe over the recent election and inauguration of President Robert Mugabe are fading.
The newly sworn-in Mugabe shocked the world again by blasting away at Western criticism over his violent election win.
His spokesman‚ George Charamba‚ announced that the 84-year old leader does not have any intention to step down from the nation's top office and told the West that they could ''go hang''.
[INTERVIEW : George Charamba‚Spokesman for Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe] (Question: And the British government for example should shut up?)
''They can go and hang. They can go and hang a thousand times.
They have no basis‚ they have no claim on Zimbabwean politics at all and that is exactly the issue.''
And not only Western nations expressed their discontent over Mugabe's win as African countries had harsh words to say behind closed doors about the autocratic ruler on the final day of the African Union summit.
[INTERVIEW : Hossam Zaki‚ Spokesman‚Egyptian Foreign Ministry ] ''I think Nigeria and Botswana were very vocal about their position regarding Zimbabwe. Other delegations spoke‚ many delegations actually‚ but not necessarily critically‚ just explaining their position and their views.''
But that didn't seem to bother the Zimbabwean leader as he made a lengthy speech in self-defense.
[INTERVIEW : Hossam Zaki‚ Spokesman‚Egyptian Foreign Ministry ] ''He went into details of the background of the problem and how it it evolved and got to the point where it is now‚ and he was critical of some non-African countries.''
Meanwhile‚ the United States and other nations are stepping up efforts to urge the UN Security Council to issue new sanctions regarding Zimbabwe‚ citing stricter restrictions on travel for officials and an arms embargo.
