With a new president comes a new vision concerning the future‚ and Taiwan's first female president Tsai Ing-wen began her first day in office with a carefully-worded speech that addressed the country's delicate cross-strait history with China. In her speech on Friday‚ Tsai said she respected the “joint acknowledgments and understandings” reached between Taipei and Beijing at a landmark meeting that took place in November 1992 where representatives from both countries debated the so-called One China Principle. ( cg) Although President Tsai mentioned the meeting‚ she took care not to bring up neither the principle nor the 1992 Consensus‚ which refers to a supposed mutual agreement made during the meeting‚ in which Taiwan allegedly agreed to China's idea of a "Single China" on the condition that it could use its own country-name. Rather‚ Tsai urged the nation to look forward and face the challenges ahead. (Chinese) "The two governing parties across the strait must set aside the baggage of history and engage in positive dialogue‚ for the benefit of people on both sides." Experts view this speech as Tsai taking a relatively moderate approach to dealing with cross-strait relationsbut plans could backfire if China views this statement as a refutation of the One-China principle. "Even though President Tsai has made her intentions clear‚ I believe China will keep pressuring Taiwan to accept the One-China principle. More than 40% of Taiwan's Economy is reliant on its business with China‚ so I think Tsai should be extra-careful in expressing her viewpoints."
