요약정보
Besides a typical astronaut's meal of shrimp cocktail‚ chicken and vegetables‚ Yi will be enjoying her own Korean palate during her TWELVE-day space trip‚ which includes the staple dish kimchi and soybean soup.
Kim Jiyoung has more.
Koreans are a people that love food especially their own.
Koreans joke among themselves about how even when they travel overseas‚ they bring kimchi and ramyeon snack noodles with them.
And so it's no surprise that with the nation's first astronaut Yi Soyeon having gone into space Tuesday night‚ many are wondering What will she eat 10 types of Korean food such as kimchi and soybean paste soup‚ won the approval of Russian space authorities to be transported beyond Earth's atmosphere.
[Interview : Kim Sungsoo‚ Ph.D. of Korea Food Research Institute] "There are several musts to be considered when processing food into spacefoods.
It must be nonperishable. It must be convenient to prepare. And it must be nutritious."
In gravity-free space‚ astronauts easily get osteoporosis so scientists boosted the content of calcium and other minerals in the food sent to space to prevent bone loss.
The decreased gravity also causes water to boil at 70 degrees Celcius so fluid-foods such as soybean paste soup were customized for the environment.
[Interview : Kim Sungsoo‚ Ph.D. of Korea Food Research Institute] "The institute plans to make other Korean foods such as Sheekhe and Galbeejjeem space-ready."
Dr. Kim‚ the chief researcher responsible for making Korean food space-safe‚ says kimchi‚ a must-have side dish at every Korean meal‚ was the toughest to turn into spacefood.
Kimchi contains a lot of bacteria that's harmless or even healthy on Earth‚ but Russian scientists wouldn't allow such a high level of micro-organisms.
Researchers sterilized the kimchi to make it space-safe.
Another challenge was getting rid of kimchi's strong smell.
Most food is freeze-dried before being taken into space but doing that wasn't enough so researchers used less garlic and a different kind of pepper to tone it down.
Yi said that she plans to prepare a Korean dinner in the International Space Station on April 12 to celebrate the 47th anniversary of the day Russian Yuri Gagarin became the first human in space.
[Reporter : Kim Jiyoung‚jennie84@arirang.co.kr] "The reasons why countries travel into space go beyond national pride. The accomplishment impacts the economy‚ scientific technology and military industry and sometimes even the meals we eat.
