And here in Korea‚ a couple of local films are ending the year on a high note.
Here to guide us through the latest development is out film critic Pierce Conran.
We ended last week's show wondering if people would ever get a chance to see THE INTERVIEW‚ and it looks like we got our answer sooner than expected. Can you guide us through the latest news?
Barely two days before its original release date (Christmas Day)‚ Sony announced that the film was once again being made available to theaters. However‚ the major exhibitors still won't show it and it was largely a coalition of smaller chains and arthouse theaters that scheduled the film. In addition‚ the film was also released on various online platforms on the same day‚ an unprecedented move for a major studio release.
What prompted Sony's sudden change of heart?
The situation has been developing very quickly. Shortly after the film's cancellation‚ President Obama expressed disappointment at Sony's decision and a number of voices spoke up about releasing the film. Chief among them was Art House Convergence‚ a group of theater owners who banded together and petitioned Sony to let them screen the film. Last week I mentioned the Texas-based cinema chain Alamo Drafthouse as a company willing to screen the film and their CEO Tim League was one of the main people responsible for Sony's reversal.
And what its the current status of the film's release?
Originally‚ the plan was to release it in 3000 theatres across North America but the new release is a limited one with only 300 theatres booking the picture. However‚ sellouts were reported ahead of Christmas Day and it remains to be seen whether larger chains allow the film later on. One thing's for sure‚ few films have ever had this kind of publicity.
What about the online version of the film?
This is a unique case as major exhibitors demand what is known as a release window‚ which is to say that major motion pictures they book must not made available on other platforms for at least 3 months‚ as they think it would diminish their returns. Smaller distributors and exhibitors have been experimenting with releasing films on VOD or online streaming‚ including SNOWPIERCER which was made available two weeks after its theatrical bow. THE INTERVIEW will likely post some huge numbers from its online platforms‚ which include YouTube‚ Google Play‚ Microsoft's Xbox and dedicated website for the film.
And so now that the people have seen the film‚ how has it been received?
The response has been mixed. The film itself garnered middling reviews and viewers comments are about the same. Of course more people are calling out the film for largely ignoring the issues that plague North Korea‚ perhaps trivialising them. Others are saying that seeing the film should not be considered a patriotic act.
Back in Korea‚ local films breached the 100 million tickets mark for the year. How significant is this milestone?
It's a huge number and this is now the third time this has happened. However‚ the mark was reached slower than in 2012 and last year‚ by one and two months‚ respectively. Overall sales also eclipsed 200 million for the second time‚ which also means that foreign films went over 100 million for the first time. Aside from a few keys hits‚ the Korean industry has seen a bit of a dip and currently its market share is just below the 50% mark. However‚ I think it stands a very good chance of going over it by year's end.
And we cannot not talk about "My Love‚ Don't Cross That River." It sold 3 million tickets so far‚ a new record set by a documentary film.
