And now it's time for our daily Arts & Culture segment‚ with our Lee Tae Ho joining me live in the studio. And today he is bringing us all the latest movie news. Good afternoon‚ Tae Ho.
Good afternoon‚ Conn-young. As you mentioned‚ today I'm here to fill everybody in on the latest movie news. And first‚ I have a story about a dilemma facing the movie industry here in Korea.
How much do you think about where you watch your movies? Or rather‚ which company owns your favorite theater?
It's probably safe to guess that few moviegoers pay much attention to where they're watching the latest blockbusters.
And with good reason.
In the United States‚ there are about 64 cinema chains with roughly 40‚000 movie theaters nationwide.
Australia has 23 cinema chains‚ Europe has 35… and how about Korea?
It's a whopping … 3.
In fact‚ roughly 97% of all movies in Korea in 2013 have been screened at a theater owned by just three cinema chains: CGV‚ Megabox and Lotte Cinema.
The matter was raised during the ongoing parliamentary audit of the government by Woo Won-sik of the main opposition Democratic Party.
The state-run Korean Film Council‚ whose mission is to promote and support Korean film‚ doesn't seem too worried by the small number of theater chains. It says free enterprise and competition will sort the matter out.
That is an incredible statistic‚ one that I'm sure many moviegoers are oblivious to.
Indeed. This is a growing problem‚ because two of the three major cinema chains are involved in film production as well‚ so a film produced by one company is not screened at a theater owned by a rival company for long.
Well it does seem like a huge problem with no easy solution.
So‚ what other movie news do you have for us today?
Well‚ how about some great new films to look forward to for the weekend? Here are previews of two of the latest to open in Korea.
First up is the Korean movie "Mango Tree" directed by Lee Soo-sung. The movie pits two lovely ladies against each other for the heart of the "perfect" man. Follow the story of Soo-jin‚ played by Hong Soo-a‚ and Ji-young‚ played by Han Soo-a‚ as they go on vacation in the Philippines‚ only to have their hearts stolen away. But the problem is that they are both swept off their feet … by the same man. Who will be the victor‚ as the two lovely lades face off? Find out in "Mango Tree‚" which opens today.
Next up is the highly anticipated "Thor: The Dark World" once again starring Chris Hemsworth and Natalie Portman. In the aftermath of Marvel's "The Avengers‚" Thor faces off against a rival that is older than the universe itself. The ancient race‚ led by their vengeful leader Malekith‚ vows to plunge the universe into darkness. Can the mighty avenger Thor conquer a nemesis that even the legendary King Odin of Asgard could not overcome? Find out in "Thor: The Dark World."
Looks like two great films.
I'm sure all the fans of the Marvel series -- "Iron Man‚" "Captain America‚" "The Avengers" and of course "Thor" -- have been very eagerly looking forward to the sequel?
Yes indeed‚ and as a fan of the Marvel series myself‚ I am‚ too And of course it will be a treat to see the lovely Natalie Portman reprise her role from the first film.
Yes‚ and I'm sure that many of the film's female fans will be looking forward to seeing Chris Hemsworth on screen again as well.
