An exhibition especially dedicated to children opened recently in Seoul. The exhibition features picture books of internationally acclaimed author Anthony Browne.
The show displays a collection of unique drawings that combine active imagination‚ simple yet humorous style‚ and solid composition.
[Interview : Hong Gyeong-gi‚ Exhibition organizer ] "Anthony Browne Retrospective showcases 280 original paintings by the British author who is one of the most beloved by Korean readers‚ as well as multi-media artworks by Lee Lee-nam‚ a representative media artist‚ who has digitally reinterpreted Browne's images."
The animals from the picture books are not magical but a metaphor of human characters Browne finds from real lives.
Media artist Lee Lee-nam[이이남] created fantastic video clips with Browne's original paintings. The artist took the author's analogue images and turned them into wittier versions.
Easily identifying themselves with animals in the drawings‚ children let their imagination run wild.
We talked to one of the young visitors.
[Interview : PD] "What was your favorite drawing[Interview : PD] "Which one[Interview : ] "This painting."
[Interview : ] "I felt calm‚ so to speak."
I wondered what if this painting turned red. Thought it might be a different artwork if the background turned red.
[Interview : Kim Ji-hyun‚ Visitor] "It feels as if our imagination has become more active. When you look at the paintings‚ there are things that don't actually exist in the real world. It is not just about the plots‚ but my child liked small details expressed by the author."
[Interview : Hong Gyeong-gi‚ Exhibition organizer] "There is a message from the author for Korean children.
When he was young‚ he was without much talent‚ much less than today's young readers in Korea. He wants to say that even when you are told not to draw‚ you should not give up and continue to read‚ write and draw. "
With his love for drawing and painting‚ over the past three decades‚ Anthony Browne has guided us through the world of imagination with a variety of characters.
There are more than 40 of these fantastic picture books that would lead us around a wonderful new world!
