Back in Seoul it's the eighth year of the European Film Festival.
European films have a reputation for being artsy and serious often to the point of scaring off people who are just looking for something fun to do.
Kim Youngwon tells us how this year's festival is taking a different course.
First started by movie distributor Show Box‚ the Megabox European Film Festival is now in its eighth year.
The little-known film fest is actually quite famous among movie maniacs who even choose to take days off work to enjoy the film fest.
On the list of thirty films this year‚ are‚ of course‚ award-winning films from the Cannes and Berlin film festivals.
Despite year-after-year box office sellouts‚ organizers say people often find European movies to be a bit intimidating.
So this year‚ they're trying a different approach.
''This year we thought‚ let's try to get a larger group to watch European movies and show them that Euro films are also fun and joyful. That's why we've selected more romantic comedies or comedies.''
Then again‚ organizer Kwon says even comedies can puzzle local viewers.
''Normally people say they don't know when the right time is to laugh during European movies as it seems like there's a different comedy code to them. dissolve But I think it's the word 'Europe' that worries Koreans. If they can digest that word comfortably‚ they can watch European films just as comfortably as Hollywood or Korean movies.''
So is this really true?
We stood by to see what a local viewer thought of one of the comedies shown this year.
''It's hard to catch German movies so I came here to watch some. Usually German or European movies have serious topics‚ but this movie was more like a Hollywood romantic comedy that we can easily watch in Korea.''
Now that doesn't mean there aren't other genres for the viewers to choose from.
The festival is segmented into six sections by genre‚ including ''Master's Choice‚'' a collection of award winning works ''Shooting Star‚'' featuring rising directors and movies and ''Midnight Express'' three movies running all night long.
''The festival runs until this Sunday.
So if you're looking for something to do this weekend‚ how about a European movie or two?
After all‚ they might not be as artsy as you'd expect.
