With just about FIVE months to go until Koreans head to the polls to elect their new president‚ the main opposition Democratic United Party's floor leader Park Jie-won urged the public to help the country step into a brighter future by voting for a change of government.
During his address at the National Assembly on Tuesday‚ Park criticized the government and the ruling Saenuri Party for working for their own benefit‚ referring to a number of recent corruption allegations against ruling party members and President Lee Myung-bak's elder brother Lee Sang-deuk‚ who was arrested last week on bribery charges.
He also said that the ruling party leadership's decision to urge its representative Chung Doo-un to turn himself in -- only after his arrest warrant was voted down at the National Assembly -- shows that the party is basically working for its presidential frontrunner Park Geun-hye.
Several ruling party lawmakers have also been critical of Park for pressuring Chung so as not to damage her presidential camapaign.
[Interview : Park Jie-won‚ Floor Leader
Democratic United Party] "The Saenuri Party met for FOUR hours‚ but in the end everything was decided based on Park's guidelines. Therefore‚ the Saenuri Party is nothing more than the private party of Park Geun-hye."
Meanwhile‚ the floor leader called on the government to scrap an information-sharing military agreement with Japan‚ saying that it will only lead to military confrontation in northeast Asia.
Park also said‚ the opposition camp will submit a proposal to the National Assembly on Tuesday‚ to dimiss Prime Minister Kim Hwang-sik for approving the deal behind closed doors.
Park also outlined other items on the DUP's agenda‚ including: an investigation to allegations of irregularities in the funding for the 2007 presidential campaign‚ passing a bill that would cut college tuition to half‚ a proposal to provide free childcare for children age TWO and under‚ and the resumption of tours to Mount Kumgang in North Korea.
Meanwhile‚ DUP Chair Lee Hae-chan said during a speech aired on KBS radio the same day that his party will make sure to carry out economic reforms so that the focus will be on supporting low-income families rather than conglomerates and that this will be done by propping up small and medium sized firms as well as traditional markets.
