A month after posting its first trade deficit in two years‚ Korea's trade account balance swung back into the black in February.
The Ministry of Knowledge Economy forecasts Korea's exports to grow by nearly seven percent this year‚ even amid the persisting economic slowdowns in major advanced nations.
The question is‚ will this be possible[Interview : ] "우리나라 수출환경이 지금은 굉장히 좋지 않은 상황입니다. 세계적으로 큰 문제중 하나라고 하면 유로존 재정위기가 있겠죠. 그리고 또 미국이라던가 선진국들이 경기둔화 문제가 있었고."
Persisting eurozone debt crisis means consumers there are spending less‚ slashing demand for Korean products.
The same goes for the United States‚ which has been struggling for some time to revive its economy.
But experts say the impact of economic slowdowns in advanced nations will be limited.
[Interview : ] "예전같은 경우에는 미국‚ 일본‚ 선진국들로의 수출 비중이 굉장히 높았죠. 그럴때는 선진국들의 경기둔화가 큰 영향을 미쳤겠지만 지금같은 경우는 우리가 수출하는 지역도 굉장히 다변화 되어있잖아요."
The United States was once Korea's largest export market‚ receiving half of the country's outbound shipments.
But now‚ Korean products reach all parts of the world.
And rising overseas demand for a handful of Korea's key export items is expected to continue leading the country's exports.
[Interview : ] "우리나라의 수출 주력 품목들인 자동차‚ 철강‚ 석유제품‚ 이런것들이 굉장히 잘되고 있죠. 자동차 같은 경우는 아시다시피 신제품들이 많이 나왔고 그리고 수출 단가가 많이 올랐어요."
Exports of automobiles‚ steel products and petroleum goods recorded double-digit growth in February from the previous year‚ with overseas demand for Korean cars growing by over 60 percent.
But not all products will show strong export growth.
[Interview : ] "반도체같은 경우는 메모리가격이 세계적으로 하락한 상태여서 최근 수출하는 금액자체가 많이 증가하지 못하고 있는 상황인데 무선통신기기같은 경우는 해외 거점에서 직접 생산하기 때문에 실질적으로 국내에서 생산해서 수출하는게 그렇게 늘어나지 않는 상황입니다."
Semiconductors and mobile phones are two of the seven key export items that make up 44 percent of Korea's exports.
With the country's major smartphone makers manufacturing their products at factories overseas‚ exports of mobile phones continue to tumble‚ dropping by nearly 30 percent in the last quarter of 2011.
And will free trade agreement be a useful tool for the world's seventh largest exporter[Interview : ] "우리나라 수출 상품에 대한 관세가 철폐된다는 얘기인데 그러면 그 나라에서의 우리나라 상품들의 가격이 그만큼 낮아질 수 있겠죠. 제도적 부분에서도 상당부분 절차나 수출하는 기업이 좀 더 편리하게 할수 있는 시스템적인 요소들이 있거든요."
But for now‚ as the world economy remains sluggish‚ Korea's exports is expected to maintain its relatively slow growth.
