Iran's comment comes after its 10-day naval drill ended near the strait of Hormuz which included firing a cruise missile on Monday.
However‚ Washington seemed rather unmoved by Tehran's threat‚ saying it was proof that sanctions imposed over Iran's nuclear program were working and are actually affecting its economy.
[Interview : Jay Carney‚ White House Spokesman] "I think it reflects the fact that Iran is in a position of weakness.
It's the latest round of Iranian threats and it's confirmation that Tehran is under increasing pressure for its continued failure for it to live up to its international obligation.
Iran is isolated and is seeking to divert attention from its domestic problems."
But in markets‚ heightened tensions at the Gulf led to soaring oil prices.
Benchmark crude jumped by over 4 percent to close at just below 103 dollars per barrel in New York which was the highest since May last year.
Brent crude for February delivery also soared at the same ratio to finish above 112 dollars a barrel in London.
Earlier this week‚ Tehran has threatened to shut down the strait of Hormuz which is the only possible route for transporting oil from the oil-rich countries.
