Gangwon Province boasts the most beautiful natural scenery in Korea. This time‚ we visited Seongyojang[선교장] in Gangneung.
It is said that the gods have blessed Seongyojang[선교장] with a crowd of weasels.In 1703‚ Mugyeong[무경] Lee Nae-beon[이내번]‚ the 11th descendent of Prince Hyoryeong[효령]‚ a brother of King Sejong[세종]‚ built this noble house typical of the late Joseon Dynasty.
[Interview : Lee Gang-baek‚ Manager] "Seongyojang literally means a "boat-bridge house‚" using the Chinese characters "seon" for boat‚ "gyo" for bridge and "jang" for house. Construction started in 1703 and had been expanded for 100 years to what it is now. It's 300 years old and has been inherited for ten generations since it moved to Gangneung."
Seongyojang[선교장] is comprised of several buildings‚ including a main quarter‚ a detached house‚ haengnangchae[행랑채]‚ Hwallaejeong[활래정] and Yeolhwadang[열화당]. Haengnangchae[행랑채]‚ in particular‚ is used as a guest house even to this day.
[Interview : Lee Gang-baek‚ Manager] "This is called julhaengnang‚ meaning a row of the haengnangchae. Haengnangchae used to be where travelers stayed‚ but now we invite both Korean and foreign guests to visit and make themselves at home."
Yeolhwadang[열화당]‚ which used to be the sarangchae of Seongyojang[선교장]‚ has become a small library. With a collection of around 2‚000 books‚ it is the most popular place among visitors.
Anyone can enjoy a peaceful and relaxing moment easy here‚ while reading books with a cup of tea.

The legation from Russia has also stayed in Seongyojang[선교장]. Its elegance sets itself apart from more modern-looking cafes.
[Interview : Kim Bong-seon‚ Visitor] "It has a very serene ambience. The pine trees make a splendid view‚ and drinking tea here makes me feel so relaxed. It's way better than a cup of coffee by the seaside."
This beautiful hanok in the middle of nature easily entices guests from all over the world.

Canada] "Probably my favorite building at Seongyojang is Hwallaejeong‚ which has very graceful roof tiles. So when I come here‚ I feel the peacefulness of traditional Korean architecture‚ which is why I keep coming back here‚ to feel that peaceful feeling."
The 300-year-old house showcases a different charm in each of the four seasons. A mere photograph suffices to create a masterful artwork.
While Seongyojang[선교장] is already a treasure in the country‚ it houses even more prized possessions that have been passed down for generations. Among them are old household items that have been preserved for hundreds of years.
[Interview : Lee Gang-baek‚ Manager] "This is a brazier. Our ancestors used to put charcoal and ashes in it to heat the rooms. It's about 400 years old‚ and has been here all along since Seongyojang was built."

For the first time ever‚ the manager reveals a map of Korea from the 16th century.
