The Jeju Agricultural Research and Extension Services began studying the mutated mandarin variety in 1997.
In 2006‚ the institute developed an early ripening variety and is doing research on 19 other varieties of mutated branches with high potential for farming.
Jeju National University is attempting artificial modification inducing DNA transformation with radioactivity.
This increases the possibility of varietal change to 1 in 10‚000 from the 1 in 1‚000‚000 in nature.
According to the Rural Development Administration‚ in 2014‚ when the Variety Protection Act is fully enforced by the International Union for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants‚ the mandarin farmers on the island will be required to pay royalties totaling billions of Korean won annually.
Regrettably‚ Jeju hasn't produced a new indigenous variety in 50 years.
That's why there are high expectations for the mutated mandarin study.
