Nitrate levels in Korea's coastal areas have risen sharply over the past few decades‚ a development which is expected to affect local marine life over the long-term.
An international research team led by Pohang University of Science and Technology says‚ nitrate levels in waters off the coasts of Korea have risen up to eight-fold over the last 30 years‚ mainly due to air pollutants blown over to the coasts from China.
The team says‚ increased nitrate levels are likely to have altered the kinds of phytoplankton living in waters near the Korean Peninsula‚ and that a change in the marine ecosystem is inevitable.
The study was the first of its kind‚ and will be published in the Science magazine next month.
