요약정보
Rough and simple‚ yet elegant in its own way.
Unlike the fancy Celadon and white porcelain‚ these brown-colored works feature profound and mysterious beauty.
These are the works of Kim Yeong-su‚ a potter who has spent some 50 years making pottery.
He has used soil commonly found on Jeju.
[Interview : Kim Yeong-su‚ Korean Master Craftsman] "This pottery can only be made in Jeju. The materials can be obtained anywhere on the island."
Volcanic soil is vulnerable to a high temperature reaching over 1‚300℃‚ which means the clay is not suitable for pottery making.
However‚ he has spent almost ten years on research and development of new pottery made of volcanic soil.
He finally succeeded in creating Jeju Heukja‚ pottery composed of Jeju volcanic soil‚ following Goryeo celadon‚ Joseon white porcelain‚ and Joseon gray-blue-powdered celadon.
Thirteen years after he dedicated himself to making this unique pottery‚ he has been designated as one of the Korean Master Craftsman‚ a title granted by the government to a craftsman with excellent skills in one area.
[Interview : Kim Yeong-su‚ Korean Master Craftsman] "I feel a great responsibility for developing Jeju ‘heukja’ into a vital part of our culture and society."
This is the 3rd time a Jeju craftsman has been appointed in 17 years.
The two other master rock craftsmen specialize in creating Dolhareubang‚ stone grandfather sculptures.
Kim is originally from Yeosu‚ South Jeolla province.
He chose Jeju as his second home to strike a new path leading to the ranks of master craftsman.
He is dreaming of another challenge.
He wants to introduce the excellence of Jeju Heukja to the world‚ as well as train younger students to pass down the pottery technique to future generations.
[Interview : Kim Yeong-su‚ Korean Master Craftsman] "I feel rewarded when I work hard on the pottery and create an unexpected pattern."
Mike Balfour‚ KCTV.
