요약정보
Suicide is a major social problem afflicting countries all over the world. Korea is no exception.
People from all walks of life‚ including public figures and celebrities‚ are choosing to take their own lives.
An average of 42 people commit suicide every day.
Korea has the highest rate of suicide among OECD countries.
[Interview : Lee Ok-ja‚ Social worker] "Korea has the highest suicide rate among OECD nations‚ and the highest in the world. It's time to foster more interest among Koreans about how to raise and mature life in a more caring‚ precious way."
Suicide prevention has become a priority for many organizations. One group installs special phones in places like the Hannam Bridge‚ where many people end their lives. They are called "Lifelines."
The phones are intended to encourage those contemplating suicide to speak to a counselor and change their minds‚ and to provide easy access to a phone to anyone witnessing a suicide attempt.
[Interview : Ha Sang-hun‚ Director
Lifeline Korea] "If someone planning to take their own life decides that they would like to speak to someone for the last time‚ they can press the lower Lifeline button to reach Lifeline volunteers who are standing by 24 hours a day. They can talk to these volunteers to calm and stop themselves from committing suicide."
In the last 5 years‚ a total of 485 people ended their lives by jumping into the Hangang. This means that one suicide occurs here every three days.
Lifeline phones will hopefully‚ help to bring that number down.
Gyeonggi Province has the highest number of suicides in all of Korea. Suicide prevention is an important issue here.
[Interview : Kim Yong-yeon‚ Head of Welfare and Health Bureau
Gyeonggi Provincial Government
] "The Unlimited Care Program for Families in Crisis plans to educate 50‚000 life monitors and 300 suicide prevention specialists who will carry out education and promotion efforts for Gyeonggi residents about the sanctity of life. We also want to become the leader in creating a social atmosphere of suicide prevention by working with Catholic‚ Protestant‚ and Buddhist groups for a national campaign."
Suicide prevention is more urgent in agricultural areas‚ which have higher suicide rates than urban areas.
Monitors are periodically dispatched to agricultural areas to speak with the villagers.
Most suicides on farms involve drinking pesticides‚ because they can be found and accessed easily.
[Interview : Han Jeong-nye‚ Hwaseong resident] "Some people in a neighboring village committed suicide by drinking pesticides. It's only been a few months since the last death‚ who was a person going through family troubles and was a little over the 70 years of age. Quite a few people have died by drinking pesticides."
This is why Gyeonggi Province has decided to install pesticide safety cabinets in 6‚700 homes in agricultural areas. Monitors come twice a month to check the state of the cabinet. The cabinets also list the phone number of a suicide prevention hotline.
[Interview : Kim Yong-han‚ Hwaseong resident] "With the pesticide safety cabinet‚ all of the pesticides are managed by one person‚ and no one else can open the cabinet. It prevents suicide by forcing people to wait out the heat of the moment. We're very grateful to have it."

Extremely sad to see people led to that state.
Many believe there's no other way to escape.
