The government claims its research and development budget has been mis-used by three state-run institutions.
According to a government office inspection report submitted by the Ministry of Knowledge Economy to the National Assembly Monday‚ three governmental institutions‚ the Evaluation Institute of Industrial Technology‚ the Institute of Energy Technology Evaluation and Planning‚ and Institute for Advancement of Technology‚ were found to have been mis-managing government funds from 2005 to June this year.
The report says‚ around 30 billion won or some 27 million US dollars worth of public funds have been lost over the six-year period.
The Evaluation Institute of Industrial Technology was found to have 77 funding irregularities during the period‚ while the Institute of Energy Technology Evaluation and Planning‚ and the Institute for Advancement of Technology had 51 and 35‚ respectively.
The mis-use of public funds came mainly from an under-supply of items necessary for the completion of projects.
Other reasons behind the loss include the exaggeration of R&D costs and wasting money for other purposes.
The ministry says‚ it will amend related laws and closely monitor funding for R&D projects to ensure public funds are not wasted.
