Financial regulators in Korea on Sunday ordered seven ailing savings banks to suspend operations following an inspection.
The Financial Services Commission has suspended Prime‚ Tomato‚ Jeil and four other Savings banks for six months starting at noon on Sunday for not meeting the capital adequacy ratio of one percent‚.. and having more debts than assets.
The banks can resume operations if they succeed in normalizing their businesses within 45 days but if not‚ they will be sold by the state-run Deposit Insurance Corporation.
Deposit holders of the seven savings banks will be allowed to withdraw part of their holdings starting Thursday.
