A lawmaker says the Korean government is not monitoring imported foodstuffs from Japan for radioactive plutonium and strontium.
Ryu Keun-Chan a member of Korea's legislative committee on agriculture said that there is only one radioactive detector available in the country for plutonium and strontium detection but that Korea is not using it because the country has no food safety standards for the harmful radioactive materials.
Both plutonium and strontium are regarded as highly harmful radioactive chemicals that could cause cancer.
