요약정보
The port city of Incheon is home to about 3-thousand Korean born Chinese‚ called "hwa-gyo" in Korean‚ which is the second largest figure after the capital Seoul.
And it is at the center of Incheon that the nation's only Chinatown is located‚ home to about 320 Chinese nationals.
Dam Jong-bal is 3rd generation hwa-gyo and runs a popular Chinese-style pastry shop in the area.
[Reporter : Dam Jong-bal‚ Chinatown business owner] "My grandfather first came and settled in Korea‚ and I was born and have lived in Korea all my life. I opened my pastry shop 5 years ago here in Chinatown."
The arrival and influx of Chinese in Incheon dates back to the opening of the port in 1883 and the subsequent establishment of the Consulate of China's Qing Dynasty there in 1884.
Although this community at one point numbered more than 10-thousand‚ it began to ebb with Japan's colonization of Korea in 1910 and the rise of communism in China.
Many old Chinese settlers have left Korea‚ but Incheon's recent efforts to revive the historic site and preserve its distinctive culture helped it return to its former glory.
[Reporter : Kim Hong-bok‚ Chief
Jung-gu Office‚ Incheon] “Incheon Chinatown boasts a long history of Korean born Chinese. Since the area was named a special cultural district in 2007‚ our office has actively promoted the town to visitors through the Chinese Village experience programs and investing in facilities like Jajangmyeon Museum and Chinese language classes for children."
And as a special cultural district‚ it serves various purposes other than being a place for these Chinese nationals to work and live.
[Reporter : 기자 김연지] "Incheon Chinatown‚ a little piece of China in Korea‚ also serves as a venue for Korean-Chinese cultural exchange‚ experience and education."
On Thursday‚ 27 Korean families visited the Chinese district for a two-day culture immersion program hosted by the Korean-Chinese Culture Center.
Paired with a Chinese college student‚ each family had the opportunity to play traditional Chinese games and instruments and speak the language.
[Reporter : Gong Lee Lee Eun-ah
Program participant Program participant] "We decided to participate in the program because we thought it'd help our daughter get interested in learning Chinese by coming into contact with the culture in a fun way. In today's global age‚ knowing Chinese seems vital."
Full of authentic Chinese eateries‚ shops and schools‚ Incheon Chinatown welcomes about 7.6 million visitors each year.
As an authentic Chinese community that has naturally developed and experienced ebbs and flows‚.. the area offers another unique example of a multicultural zone and attests to Korea's leap forward in diversity and globalization.
