[Interview : ] "Magician!"
These are the first participants of the "Project to Raise Multicultural Children as Leaders"‚ and they were featured on Arirang Today last month. Their visit to Cheong Wa Dae [청와대] put them in the spotlight.
This time‚ we joined them in their visit to Panmunjeom [판문점]‚ the Third Infiltration Tunnel and a frontline observation post!
[SOV]
[Interview : ] "Part 2 of "The Project to Raise Multicultural Children as Leaders" begins now!"
Their visit was timed with June being Korea's month for commemorating patriots.
[Interview : PD
] "Where are you going today[Interview : ] "Panmunjeom!"
[Interview : ] "We are going to Panmunjeom!"
These barbed-wire fences split Korea in two‚ and are the remnants of the Korean War. They are a reminder of Korea being the world's only divided nation.
Today's first destination is Panmunjeom.
They are headed for the backdrop of the movie they are watching in the bus right now. Panmunjeom is a joint security area‚ or JSA‚ that is patrolled by both North Korean and United Nations forces. The armistice putting a halt on the Korean War was signed here on July 27‚ 1953.
They finally arrive at Panmunjeom. This is a chance for these multicultural children to learn about Korea's state of division and think about reunification.
[Interview : PD
] "How do you feel about visiting Panmunjeom[Interview : ] "I'm excited and scared at the same time."
[Interview : PD
] Why are you excited[Interview : ] "Not everyone can enter Panmunjeom."
Panmunjeom does not fall under the jurisdiction of either Koreas. Civilians can visit Panmunjeom only with an authorization from the UN Command. Freedom House‚ United Nations Checkpoint Number 3 and the Bridge of No Return are popular sights within Panmunjeom.
Panmunjeom is a symbol of division‚ where soldiers from both Koreas stand face to face. How do the children feel while seeing the soldiers[Interview : ] "Soldiers from both Koreas always face each other. I am worried about what will happen if a gunfight suddenly takes place."
[SOV]
[Interview : ] "I can't believe that people from both Koreas fought each other."
The dreams of these multicultural children make up the future of Korea. And today's visit is a lesson to the children about Korea's division and history.
[SOV]
[Interview : ] "I want to visit to North Korea after reunification."
I crossed the border while in the conference room because
the border rules do not apply in the room.
While Panmunjeom symbolizes the pain of division‚ it also is a symbol for peace. It is the only place where Koreans can meet unarmed without a wall or fence separating them‚ just like the South and North Korean Red Cross conferences.
[Interview : Kim Ryeong-a‚ Student
Miwon Elementary School
] "After visiting Panmunjeom‚ I thought that South and North Korea should quickly take care of their differences and reunite."
The children also visit other symbolic places within the DMZ‚ such as the 3rd Infiltration Tunnel.
[SOV]
[Interview : ] "The 3rd Infiltration Tunnel went 435m past the Southern Limit Line. It was created in order to invade South Korea."
The infiltration tunnel is a military tunnel dug by North Korea under the DMZ in order to invade the South.
Four tunnels have been discovered to date. The children get to see the inside of the tunnel for themselves after taking a monorail ride.
[SOV]
[Interview : ] "I don't feel good to see North Korea dig such tunnels‚ even though the war is over."
[Interview : Urahm Dass‚ Student
Sadong Elementary School
] "It's scary to see such a deep tunnel dug in order to invade South Korea. The tunnel is blocked now. The tunnel can be used as part of a tourist
