Coming-of-Age Day falls on every third Monday of May in Korea which holds a significance at the individual‚ social and national level.
Those turning 19 are granted the FULL rights of an adult‚ including the right to vote and the right to get married.
To celebrate the day‚ a traditional coming-of-age ceremony was held in Namsangol Hanok Village‚ hosted by the city of Seoul.
At the sound of drums‚ 100 participants dressed in hanbok‚ or Korean traditional clothes‚ marched in and two honorable guests dubbed "big guests" entered.
It is said that a big guest known for his/her wisdom was invited to a coming-of-age ceremony held in individual homes by parents.
Under the big guests' instructions‚ ceremony assistants made a bun on each female participant's head while placing a gat‚ Korean traditional hat made of bamboo and horsetail‚ on male participants' head.
The assistants then carefully dressed the participants in traditional ADULT clothes symbolizing the transition from their childhood to adulthood.
Fully dressed as an adult‚ the young people bowed down to their parents to express their love and respect for them.

Making the ceremony special was the participation of multicultural youths and foreign students.
[Reporter : Letizia Bruscartini‚ Ceremony participant from Italy] "I'm really lucky to be here and to wear this beautiful hanbok. The experience was really interesting and amazing."
While some were affected by the festivity of the ceremony‚ others were moved by its symbolic meaning.
[Reporter : Seong Young-jae‚ Ceremony participant] "Going through the ceremony made me feel that I should keep etiquettes and do my filial duty to parents."
Meanwhile‚ parents also bowed down to their adult-turned children showing THEIR respect for their adult-turned children.
