May 8th is Parents' Day in Korea‚ a day when children express their gratitude to their parents by giving carnations‚ and families gather to spend time together.
To mark the day for families‚ various events and festivals were held nationwide‚ and one event in particular was held at the heart of Seoul in Namsangol Hanok Village.
The two-day "Namsangol Festival for Familial Love" attracted many families looking for something special to experience on Parents' Day Sunday.
Prepared specially for the day was a corner where guests could write family mottos on traditional Korea paper for keepsakes and a booth where children could make paper carnations for their parents.
In the village of five hanoks‚ or traditional Korean houses‚ from the Joseon Dynasty common traditional cultural programs were held‚ attracting not only Korean families but foreign tourists.
In one hanok‚ visitors could try on the royal robes of Joseon kings and queens.
Parents and children could also make Korean traditional masks‚ kites and short bamboo flutes called "danso."
At the Cheonugak pavilion within the village‚ which was used as a summer resort during the Joseon Dynasty‚ a series of traditional culture performances continued throughout the day‚ including two types of Korean classical music known as "gugak" and "pansori."
The elderly could sing and dance to the merry tune of gugak‚ while children visited booths to blow bubbles and make magic balloons.
And‚ of course‚ with so many families out and about on Sunday‚ various parts of Seoul were face with serious traffic jams and congestion throughout the day.
