Dol-harubang which means "stone grandfather" in Jeju dialect‚ is a symbol of the island‚… and was once believed to protect people from bad luck.
This 81-year-old man in Jeju City started making Dol-harubang about 60 years ago after teaching himself to make statues‚ but as the number of his art works increased‚ he turned his private work place into a park.
"Chang opened this park in year 2000 and now there are some 3-thousand statues of Dol-harubang and everyday Jeju residents from the past."
The artisan says that it takes him one day to finish small statues‚ but it can take up to a year to complete larger ones.
It took him five months to make a 5-meter tall Dol-harubang‚ which is the largest of its type on Jeju island.
[Interview : ] "I have been here in the 70s but a lot have changed. The entrance is the same‚ but there are many new statues. They look great and remind me of the old days."

Chang also tells visitors about his work to help people understand and remember the past in an effort to preserve the traditions of Jeju.
The work is physically challenging‚ but he still works everyday‚ and says that he is planning to work as long as he is healthy enough to chisel and hammer.

Chang recently wrote a book about his life as a stonemason on Jeju Island‚ which will be published this year.
