요약정보
We begin tonight with the nuclear reactor crisis in Japan.
Japanese authorities say that the No. 2 reactor at the Daiichi plant has a cooling system failure‚ increasing the possibility of a THIRD explosion at the site since Friday.
And on Monday morning‚ the No. 3 reactor exploded due to a hydrogen buildup in the containment building‚ causing further alarm over the possibility of a meltdown. We turn now to reporter Kang Seok-ho for the latest on the situation in Japan. Seok-ho‚ fill us in.
[Reporter : SEOKHO] Over at the Fukushima's Daiichi nuclear power plant‚ we are now getting reports that the coolant in the No. 2 reactor had evaporated and its fuel rods were exposed.
Japanese authorities stated that sea water is now being pumped into the reactor to cool down the rods‚ but also said that they cannot confirm if they were melting.
And Japanese media is reporting a radioactive steam being released into the atmosphere from the No. 2 reactor‚ raising concerns that there could be yet another explosion.
The No. 3 reactor experienced a hydrogen explosion at 11:01 a.m. Monday after the emergency measure to pump in sea water as coolant failed.
Authorities say seven workers and four military personnel were injured from the blast.
Japan's chief cabinet secretary said that the container vessel enclosing the reactor rods are still intact and that the engineers are pumping sea water into the reactor to prevent further explosions.
How about the death toll and other damage so far[Reporter : SEOKHO] The official tally now stands at more than 1‚800 with 2‚300 missing.
But Japan's Kyodo News Agency reports of local police in Miyagi Prefecture finding 2-thousand bodies washed ashore‚ indicating the number of casualties will rise even more.
In terms of economic damage‚ Tokyo's benchmark index Nikkei dropped more than six percent to close at around 9‚600 on the first day of trading after the disaster struck Japan on Friday.
And in response‚ Japan's central bank is injecting a record 15 trillion yen‚ or about 180 billion US dollars‚ into financial markets to help its economy rebound.
I understand that a Korean rescue team arrived in Japan on Monday to help local authorities with rescue efforts. Can you update us on the Korean government's support for Japan and also on Korean nationals in the affected areas[Reporter : SEOKHO] Yes‚ the 102-member rescue team landed in Fukushima around 3 p.m. on Monday before moving on to Sendai.
And Korea's foreign ministry said that Seoul is ready to send an additional team of 100 rescuers should Tokyo request further assistance.
As for Korean nationals in Japan‚ Seoul confirmed its first death from the ongoing crisis.
A 40-year-old man named Lee‚ a construction worker at a thermal power plant building site in Ibaraki Prefecture‚ has been found dead.
And as of 6 p.m. Monday‚ there are no reports of additional casualties for Koreans in Japan.
And in the afternoon‚ officials sent to the Sendai consulate office held a press conference and said 36 of some 200 Koreans in the area have gone back to Korea.
The remaining people will also evacuate from Sendai as soon as flights can be arranged.
That's all the updates I have for you at this time. Back to you.
Thank you‚ Seok-ho.
