요약정보
In response to the natural disaster unfolding in Japan‚ the Korean government has responded and reached out to help its eastern neighbor.
A small‚ yet experienced‚ team of 5 rescue specialists and two dogs has arrived at Tokyo's Haneda Airport‚ to answer Japan's request for rescue dogs to assist in recovery operations‚ which Seoul received in the early hours on Saturday.
This team‚ which was also dispatched to Haiti last year‚ will work in cooperation with Japan's foreign and defense ministries.
And the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade said that the Korean government has readied a full 120-member rescue team‚ made up of 76 rescue experts and 37 medical staff‚ as well as relevant ministry officials‚ to be dispatched to Japan.
The foreign ministry adds that once Tokyo makes a formal request for full scale assistance‚ this team will board air force transport aircrafts and can depart for Japan as early as Saturday night.
Meanwhile‚ the ministry has prepared a back-up team of five diplomats‚ which has departed from Incheon International Airport for Sendai at around 6 p.m. local time to help the consulate staff in the disaster stricken city.
The Korean consulate in Sendai has been transformed into an emergency shelter for the Korean nationals in the area.
15 people have taken shelter at the office so far‚ and the consulate staff there is trying to maintain an emergency hotline with others‚ including 27 college students‚ airport staff and Samsung Electronics employees in the Sendai region.
While there have been no reports of casualties for Koreans in the affected areas so far‚ 30 people who reside in Iwate Prefecture could not be contacted to check on their safety.
