With health-consciousness everywhere‚ Korea has joined the international efforts to actively inform the public of the harms of smoking through provocative campaigns and by increasing the number of smoke-free zones.

Seoul Square is one of the busiest public areas in this city.
On March 1st‚ Seoul‚ Cheonggye‚ and Gwanghwamun Squares were designated as smoke-free zones‚ and active PR activities have been carried out since then.

After three months of PR activities‚ the city government plans to impose a fine of US$90 on those who smoke within the smoke-free zones starting June of this year. It also intends to gradually expand these zones to include the bus stops in the center lanes and other public places by December.
One of the most important challenges that we must face to make Korea smoke-free is changing the stylish and appealing designs of cigarette packets in Korea. They are a stark contrast to those sold in other countries‚ which include disturbing images that warn of the dangers of smoking.
According to a survey that asked about the seriousness of the warning sent across by cigarette packets‚ those sold in Korea were chosen to be the least serious.
