The Korean government says it is not entangled in a territorial dispute with neighboring Japan‚ emphasizing that the eastern Dokdo islets are part of Korean territory.
The comments by Seoul's Foreign Ministry spokesperson Cho Byung-jae came in response to Tokyo's new top diplomat Takeaki Matsumoto's stance that the islets are Japanese.
Cho added that the Dokdo islets are Korean‚ historically‚ geographically and by international law‚ and the government will continue to stand against Japan's wrongful claims in a resolute and stern manner.
Meanwhile on North Korea‚ Minister Matsumoto said if Pyeongyang were to actively and sincerely try to resolve outstanding issues with regional partners‚ Japan would be open for bilateral talks with the Kim Jong-il regime.
