More than US$3.1 million have been budgeted to create jobs for the 2‚187 senior citizens gathered today.

Back in 2010‚ the Korean National Statistics Office surveyed senior citizens in order to find out the main reasons for seeking employment. The number one reason was financial independence‚ followed by the joy of working.

Korea Labor Force Development Institute for the Aged] "In Korea‚ there are 1‚500‚000 citizens who are currently living on welfare. Senior citizens make up 26% of this number. Most of them rely on their children for allowances since they only earn about 6.5% of their living expenses through employment. Therefore‚ the job creation project for senior citizens is an important initiative that must be carried out by the government.
In February 2011‚ the government announced the expansion of the job creation project for senior citizens.

Division of Senior Support] "According to a survey on senior citizens carried out by the Ministry of Health and Welfare‚ there are 1‚160‚000 senior citizens currently seeking employment. By this year‚ the Ministry will increase the number of jobs for senior citizens by 200‚000 from 186‚000 in 2010. By 2015‚ this number will increase to 300‚000."
By examining the success cases‚ let's take a look at how the central and local governments as well as enterprises are creating jobs for senior citizens.
Arirang Today's first destination was a tofu specialty shop that reports annual sales of over US$100‚000.
[Interview : ] " How long have you been working here[Interview : Lee Jong-dae‚ Age 72 ] "For a year. I have been working while learning how to make tofu. I am used to it now."
72-year-old Lee Jong-dae works at the tofu shop for 5 hours on alternate days. His retirement ended his busy life as a self-employed businessman‚ but he truly feels a sense of reward and excitement from working again.
[Interview : Lee Jong-dae‚ Age 72 ] "When do I feel the most satisfied at work[Interview : Kwon Jeong-sun‚ Age 73 ] "I am 73 years old now‚ but I can work because my health is fine. Instead of asking my children for US$200 or $300 each time I need money‚ I am much happier earning my own money."
The Senior Club is in charge of managing the tofu specialty shops that have enabled senior citizens to begin new phase in their lives. Under the Ministry of Health and Welfare‚ it assumes exclusive responsibility to create jobs for senior citizens according to the conditions of each region to ultimately promote the senior citizens' welfare.

Gwanak Senior Club] " The tofu specialty shop‚ "Bean Pod‚" was established as an initiative to create jobs for senior citizens. In 2010‚ it recorded US$152‚600 in annual sales. Based on such success‚ the Ministry of Employment and Labor recognized "Bean Pod" as a social enterprise in December 2010. By expanding this enterprise‚ we will pioneer a path to sell goods made by senior citizens in addition to creating jobs."
