The US envoy to the International Atomic Energy Agency or IAEA Glyn Davies says North Korea must allow international nuclear inspectors back into its nuclear facilities before the resumption of multilateral talks.
Speaking during an IAEA meeting in Vienna on Monday‚ Davies saidthat the agency can not accept North Korea as a nuclear weapon state and that it must let international nuclear inspectors back into its facilities before related parties can consider reopening the six-party talks on the North's denuclearization.
North Korea withdrew from the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty in 2003 and the UN agency's ability to monitor North Korea's nuclear claims has been limited since 2009 when North Korea banned IAEA inspectors from entering their plants.
During the meeting‚ Davies also saidthat North Korea's unveiling of its uranium enrichment facility last November "remains a matter of serious concern for the US‚" adding such actions clearly violate UN Security Council Resolutions 1718 and 1874 as well as the September 2005 Joint Statement commitments.
The envoy firmly added that the US is open to meaningful engagement with Pyeongyang but stressed that Washington will continue to impose sanctions on the North until the regime behaves responsibly.
