Its current death toll stands at 166‚ yet is expected to surge more than 200.
The city's 24 historic churches have been ravaged and some need to be demolished for safety reasons‚ while deep grey silt‚ or liquefaction‚ has swamped roads and gardens.
After nearly two weeks of relentless rescue efforts‚ authorities confirmed last Friday that they no longer expect to find survivors from the devastated central district area.

However‚ international rescue teams relentlessly continued their search and rescue operations in hopes for finding more survivors.
[Interview : John Cawcutt‚ Taskforce leader Chief Superintendent
Australia] "We are here to help. Obviously we send our condolences stop all the nationalities who have been involved in this… it's an absolute tragic situation. And I guess that's one of the reasons that we are here. No matter where you are in the world‚ we will come and help and assist."
[Interview : Yukio Yoshi‚ Chief Officer of the Japanese Search and Rescue Team] "So we are now doing the rescue work in CTV building with a New Zealand team and Chinese team."
Meanwhile‚ the Christchurch earthquake triggered enormous attention from international media around the globe as hundreds of journalists and media camped in and outside of Christchurch gearing up to present the country's most urgent and heart-wrenching stories to their viewers and readers.
[Interview : Talitha Cummins. Journalist
7 Network Australia] "It's always very competitive‚ especially when it comes to stories like this. We have been running our own race really and doing our own thing outside the city center‚ so haven't witnessed too much of that."
Authorities arranged two media tours per day while the city's central business district was cordoned off by the New Zealand military.
The New Zealand government announced a support package‚ a roughly 90-million US dollar short-term subsidy program early last week to help small businesses and workers recover following the earthquake.
Christchurch residents lined up in front of the social welfare agency Work and Income in the shattered downtown area with many pleading for government support to help them through these difficult times.
Meanwhile‚ the Christchurch Korean Society said after the earthquake that there have been reports regarding damages in the Korean community from cracked driveways to wrecked shelters.
But the biggest concern for Korean residents in Christchurch is what the future holds with the continuing fear of more quakes and the ongoing aftershocks.
[Interview : Yim Yu-kyung‚ Cafe barista
Christchurch] "I managed to escape when the building shook and I saw it collapse. And my car that I parked right in front of the building got squashed."
The country held a two minute moment of silence at 12:51 p.m. Tuesday‚ March 1st‚ exactly a week after the devastating earthquake‚ to remember the people killed in the quake as a sign of solidarity with Christchurch residents and pay tribute to those who lost their lives.
New Zealand Prime Minister John Key‚ international search and rescue staff‚ and volunteers stood shoulder to shoulder as the ceremony began.
Emotions overwhelmed the crowd as a small pile of bricks and concrete pieces were laid in front of the dignitaries to represent some of the key sites destroyed in the central business district.
