An additional 400 children in northern Nigeria have died of lead poisoning since last November the latest casualties in an ongoing crisis blamed on illegal gold mining.
The death toll reported by Nigeria's National Emergency Management Agency is in addition to the more than 400 local children who‚ according to the United Nations‚ died between last March and October.
Experts have blamed illegal gold miners who dig up ore containing large amounts of lead‚ contaminating the air‚ soil and water.
A previous UN report showed that lead in the soil and mercury in the air were 500 times the acceptable levels in some villages in the area.
