Actor Hyun Bin began his mandatory military service as a ROK Marine on Monday to the chagrin of countless fans.
He thanked some 2-thousand fans and reporters both from Korea and abroad who gathered in front of the Marine bootcamp in Pohang to see him off.
Hyun Bin will first go through six weeks of basic training before serving in the Marine Corps for 21 months.
The 28-year-old is at the height of his career after his breakthrough role in the Korean drama 'Secret Garden' which was a huge hit here in the country.
His decision to join the Marines came right after North Korea's bombing of a South Korean island in November.
His decision which is quite a contrast to many celebrities who have been charged with draft-dodging helped him gain even greater popularity.
